Visiting Werder Bremen is a great experience. A vibrant yet relatively small city, with a giant club at the heart. Read below about our day in Bremen.
Getting to Bremen
We took a direct flight from London Stansted to Bremen on a 6.10am flight, arriving at 8.30am. Of course such an early flight allowed flexibility if the match moved to an early kick-off which didn’t happen. Ryanair were on time and a great flight.
Bremen City
Bremen is well positioned for a football fan. Whilst the city boasts the famous green and white Bundesliga Club, several other lower tier clubs can be found in the area, whilst Germany’s second largest city, Hamburg, is just an hour away by train for even more options. With a population exceeding half a million people, it is also a very friendly place to visit.
We were in the Market Square by 10.30am and on a lovely day, Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich fans sat in the glorious sunshine having beers whilst showing off their colours. There were some tremendous shirts on display.
Werder Bremen History
Just how big are Werder Bremen? One statistic answers that which is that the club share the record for the most seasons played in The Bundesliga, matched only by Bayern Munich. Founded in 1899 the club are currently celebrating their 125 year anniversary and boast being champions of Germany on four occasions, 1964-65, 1987-88, 1992-93 and most recently 2003-04.
The Weser Stadium
The club have played at the Weser Stadium since moving in back in 1909 and has seen many renovations, not least between 2008 and 2011 with the stadium removing the old sports track, adding a new roof and making the capacity 42,100.
The Hanseatic city is also a very beautiful city to visit and we made sure that we had time to once again explore all corners and no more so than the one kilometre scenic walk along the banks of the Weser River on route to the Weser Stadium.
Pre-Match
On arrival at the stadium 90 minutes or so before kick-off, it was already extremely busy. We had tickets for Block 132 behind the goal and the fans there tend to arrive early. The queue was big, yet moved swiftly. The view of those famous angled floodlights dominated every image.
Once inside the stadium, ahead of the game we were treated to the sound of “Lebenslang GrünWeiß” which is traditionally played before each home match and it’s so good you can’t help join in (well the chorus anyway!). Take a listen to this below!
Werder Bremen v Bayern Munich
Visiting Werder Bremen took place as part of the 4th round of matches for the 2024-25 Bundesliga campaign and we highlighted the match versus Bayern Munich as the one we wanted to attend when visiting Werder Bremen. Inside the stadium was an amazing sight of green and white.
Bayern Munich took the lead after 23 minutes through Olise with a tap-in and Musiala then doubled the lead for the visitors after 32 minutes in similar fashion as they went in 2-0 up at the break.
The second half started with green pyro’s launched behind the goal as the Werder Bremen fans looked for something to kickstart a second half comeback.
The second half however saw Bayern Munich ramp things up with three goals in nine minutes. First it was Kane who got in on the act in the 57th minute, moments later Olise added his second and by the 65th minute Gnabry had added the fifth. This was a strong performance in a one-sided match with Munich having 25 efforts on goal with the home side creating none.
Final score: Werder Bremen 0 Bayern Munich 5

Where to eat in Bremen
Bremen’s oldest district is called “Schnoor” and within the majestic streets you will find “Beck’s in’n Snoor”. We treated ourselves to a Pork Schnitzel with mushrooms at this fabulous restaurant. Bremen is a fantastic city we would recommend for a short city break – football or not.
