What are the top things to do in Rome for football fans?  Here are several must-see locations!

Stadio Olimpico

Visit Rome as a football fan and you will of course head to Stadio Olimpico – the stadium shared by the two massive clubs, AS Roma and Lazio.  This grand area needs no introduction but is surely number one on your list.

The stadium, restored in 1953 next to the River Tiber, has been host to many great events such as Italia 90 and most recently the opening match of Euro 2020 as pictured below.

The best time to visit of course is for a home match for either AS Roma or Lazio.

Francesco Totto Mural

What are the top things to do in Rome for football fans?  On our most recent trip we wanted to look at some of the other football locations in this vast city.

We start with a now famous mural of AS Roma legend Francesco Totti.  The one-club number 10 played 619 times for Roma scoring 250 goals between 1993 and 2017  and is depicted in a beautiful little alcove in the central Monti district.

An image which you may well have seen, but where is it and how do you get there?  From Termini (the main station in Rome) it is a relatively comfortable 15 minute walk (1.3km) which can easily be navigated using Google Maps.

Alternatively jump onto Metro Line B (there are three lines A,B,C).  Enter via Piazza dei Cinquecento and follow direction for Laurentina, ride 1 stop and alight at Cavour. Walk 350m to Via del Pozzuolo 11. Here’s a little video to help you 👇

The Larger Francesco Totti Mural

Once you have seen the famous Totti image, you may feel that you have ticked off art for the weekend, however that’s not the case – there is a second mural you must visit!

This giant Mural of the AS Roma legend is located on the side of a school located on the corner of Via Sibari and Via Apulia, close to Via Vetulonia, the street on which Totti grew up.  If trekking between the two murals it is as quick by foot as it is by train, however will take 30 minutes for a 2.3km walk.  We grabbed a Uber costing 9 Euro which was the quickest way of getting there (and 35 degree heat inspired this decision!).

Campo Testaccio

Next on our list we located Campo Testaccio where Roma famously played between 1929 and 1940. Several reports suggest that this ground was designed based on Goodison Park with spectators close to the pitch.

Campo Testaccio Rome

Roma were formed two years earlier than their playing days at Campo Testaccio, in 1927 through a merger of three Rome clubs.  During the years at Campo Testaccio Roma achieved relative success finishing 2nd on two occasions.  The last match to be played at Campo Testaccio was in 1940 and was demolished later that year on 21st October 1940 as they left to play at Stadio Nazionale.

Campo Testaccio

What will you find at the site of Campo Testaccio? It’s pretty much derelict. There have been many stories of it being redeveloped, re-opening, however as time passes it looks as though this will never happen.  Truly a site worth visiting whilst you can even in the current state and through the fence where a convenient hole has emerged allowing a camera to fit through!

Campo Testaccio Stadium Rome

In 2023 on the anniversary of their first match there, a famous 2-1 victory over Brescia, AS Roma fans and volunteers retuned to their old stomping ground in an effort to give it some much needed maintenance.

Do let us know if anything in this short write up inspires you to visit any of these famous spots!
