A Freiburg Football Weekend may not be someone’s first guess when you tell someone you are heading to  Germany to watch Bundesliga Football!

Where is Freiburg

Freiburg im Breisgau is found within the Black Forest region of South-West Germany.  The medieval old town (reconstructed since damage in the war) is a beautiful place to stay but of course the main pull was visiting SC Freiburg.

SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg have been participants in the Bundesliga since winning promotion back in 2016, and in total have spent 24 seasons in the Bundesliga since it’s inception.  The 2024/2025 Bundesliga season saw SC Freiburg finish in 5th place which catapulted the club into the Europa League where they have now reached the last 16!

Europa-Park Stadium

Europa-Park Stadium is the shiny new home for SC Freiburg, moving in as recently as the 2021/2022 season.  From the outside the first impression was that it looked like an airport terminal.

Getting to the stadium from the City Centre was quite straight forward, but is a long way out.  We took Tram 1 from outside our Hotel, Zum Roten Baren (The Red Bear), to Moosgrund Station, however it is then a good 20-25 minute walk through a very quiet area.  We repeated this journey on the return.

Inside the stadium we found steep stands which were close to the pitch.  A large 36% of the capacity is standing however we were able to purchase a seat in the Sudtribune stand. We were seated in Block V which is alongside the ultra’s section and behind the goal.

Arriving early we were able to see the SC Freiburg crescent made up via the white and black seats.  The image in the top half of the SC Freiburg badge is of a mythical Griffin type creature, the head of an eagle and a Lion’s body.

During the match and at half-time fans are able to leave the concourse and eat/drink outside the stadium as it is secured by external fencing which makes it a lot less crowded than many other stadiums.

The beer cups were branded by the brewery as opposed to the club but with stackable handles you cannot go wrong.  Always be aware that these type of cups are normally sold with a 2 Euro deposit which you can claim back when returning.

Freiburg v Borussia Monchengladbach

The match finished 2-1 to the hosts as SC Freiburg scored their second goal in the 74th minute to take a 2-0 lead before the visitors grabbed a late 85th minute consolation.

Getting Tickets

With a 34,700 capacity, very few tickets make general sale so if you are looking for a small group to attend then you should consider a memberships where up to 4 tickets can be obtained.

Other things to do in Freiburg

Whilst on a Freiburg Football Weekend you may find yourself staying for a night or two.  The City sits by Schlossberg Hill so if you are keen on walking/hiking then this is a great activity – a funicular links the city to the highlands

Where to Stay?

We stayed in the Old Town at a traditional hotel called Zum Roten Baren.  It serves good food and beer and the rooms are spacious.  Staying on the second floor we had lovely views of the town.  Opposite is a great wine bar and a beer shop next door too.
