England v Germany History
Ask any England fan the first thing that comes into their mind when you mention England v Germany and most will say 1966 even if they are too young to have lived through it.
England v Germany matches are supposed to be gigantic affairs however in recent years the meetings between the two proud football nations have been at much younger stages of tournaments. As recent as Euro 2021 England faced Germany in the Round of 16 winning 2-0 with late goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane seeing England progress to the latter stages and the belief began.
At the 2010 World Cup again in the Round of 16 with England trailing 2-1, Frank Lampard’s shot crossed the line, however the goal was not given. No-one knows how the game may have changed had the score line changed to 2-2 and in reality England were beaten by a superior Germany team on the day with Muller running the show with Germany running out 4-1 victors.
England fans will can of course point to that amazing 5-1 victory at the Olympiastadion in Munich on the route to the 2002 World Cup where Michael Owen blew Die Mannschaft away with a spectacular hattrick in-front of 63,000 fans. This was the last match Germany played at the Olympiastadion in Munich due to the building of the Allianz Arena.
How could England face Germany in the Euro 2024 Final?
The draw works kindly if you are hoping to see an England v Germany Euro 2024 Final although many things have to take place for that to become real.
First of all, if England and Germany both win their groups, the stage is set perfectly. Both nations will fancy their chances of this occurring with Germany facing opposition from Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in Group A whilst England would need to stay ahead of Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia in Group C.
However, to get to the final would be tricky in itself with England potentially facing Italy in the Quarter Finals and France in the Semi Finals, before the England v Germany Euro 2024 Final could take place in Berlin.
The alternative?
Should England finish second in their group and Germany with Group A, then the two nations would once again face off in the Round of 16. This game would be played on Saturday June 29th at Westfalenstadion, Dortmund.
There is of course another permutation, should England finish second in the group and Scotland win Group A then it would create a repeat of the oldest fixture in International Football – Auld Enemy!
