It has already been confirmed that due to the new Champions League format that Germany, along with Italy, have earned an extra place for next season’s Champions League based on European Performance.
This means that there will be FIVE representatives from The Bundesliga when the new format kicks off for the 2024/25 Champions League.
The European Performance Spots as we know are awarded to the Football Association’s with the best collective performance in the previous European campaigns.
How can Germany have SIX entries?
But, due to the new Champions League format next season, with two extra spaces available, Germany could yet secure an unprecedented SIXTH berth. How can that occur when England only have four places?
Borussia Dortmund hold the key. With the Yellow/Black team finishing the 2023/24 Bundesliga Season in fifth position it means that they would be the fifth team to qualify from the league positions.
However, Borussia Dortmund have also found themselves competing in this season’s Champions League Final which means should they win, they would qualify for next season’s competition as holders, and The Bundesliga qualification would move down to sixth place.
Who will benefit?
The big winners here would of course be the team who finished sixth in the Bundesliga and that is Eintracht Frankfurt. The Eagles finished a massive 16 points below Dortmund who are above them in the final standings
All eyes will be on Wembley on Saturday 1st June to see if Borussia Dortmund can defeat Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League Final.
