Our Atalanta Football Trip started off as conveniently as possible.  A Flight into Bergamo airport saw us arrive just an hour before kick-off.  Such is the close proximity of Bergamo Airport to the Stadium somehow we thought we would make kick-off, however a middle row on the plane meant that our position at Passport Control would thwart that idea!

We chose a hotel location close to the main train station for an easy next day and this was just a 10 minute ride from the airport.  A quick bag drop and we were off to the stadium.

Gewiss Stadium

Atalanta play at the Gewiss Stadium which holds 21,000 spectators.  We sat in the Curva Sud with tickets costing just 21 Euro’s which were available on-line throigh Viva Ticket who provide tickets for many football clubs in Italy as well as other events.

Atalanta v Empoli

Our Atalanta Football Trip saw a match between Atalanta and Empoli.  Four defeats in the previous six Serie A matches have seen Atalanta slip to 6th place.

Entering the stadium late meant that we were able to sample the stadium from the outside – it was an incredible noise and if you didn’t know were it was located you could follow the sound.

Inside the stadium was quite spacious and just after arrival it was Empoli who took the lead as Half Time approached with a goal from Tyronne Ebuhi which was met, as expected, with disappointment and criticism from a passionate fanbase.

In the second half Atalanta came from behind to take three much needed points.  First of all Marten de Roon headed an equaliser after 58 minutes and then as the game reached the final stages, Rasmus Hojlund snatched an 86th minute just minutes after coming on as a substitute.

This victory ends that bad run for Atalanta and, for now, creates a seven point cushion above Juventus who face the prospect of a trip to the San Siro to play Inter Milan on Sunday evening.  Atalanta sit in 5th place, two points behind Roma having played one match more.
